Almaza Khalil School

Amer Ahmad – Febreuary 2019

Winter has passed, and spring has arrived, bringing with it the return of the frequent school visits that had been suspended during the colder months. In a single day, three schools expressed their desire to visit Tell Mozan, arriving in two separate groups.

Almaza Khalil School from Qamishli was the first to arrive at the site. Around 45 students were eager to explore the landscapes of ancient Urkesh, enjoying the site’s green mantle as it came back to life with the arrival of spring. They showed great enthusiasm in receiving explanations and learning about the history and archaeology of the ancient city. Their curiosity led to a variety of questions: What was the difference between the Abi and the Temple from a religious perspective? Would the archaeological mission be able to uncover the remaining parts of Tupkish’s palace? And what had led to the abandonment of the site?

These questions reflected not only the students’ eagerness to learn about the past, but also their vivid imagination and their desire to understand the mysteries that still surround ancient Urkesh.
